In Sardinia the ancient Ignition tradition of "fire" is still alive. At the heart of this tradition also continues to Seui, in its many districts, despite the extremely harsh winter climate. In our center, "is fogus" in January are lit in honor of three saints: Efisio, Anthony and Sebastian.
The first of the bonfire "Winter", which comes on the January 14, is dedicated to Sant'Efisio (Sant'Efis "), a martyr in Sardinia. In him they see the faithful protector of all the soldiers. He himself was a Roman legionary who came to fight in Sardinia the "Ilies," bitter people in the room even jump Seui, later converted to Christianity.
The second, entitled to Saint Anthony Abbot ("Saint Anthony"), comes on every 17 January. This Saint, who is referred to as the true founder of Christian monasticism. During his long life of hermit retired to the desert of the Thebaid, where he was followed by many disciples with whom he founded a monastic community. He died in 357 AD The popular iconography depicting the saint dressed in a tunic, a long white beard, a stick with bells and a pig foot. The presence of this animal is because Saint Anthony is considered the protector of domestic animals. But not only. In fact today is invoked against the "sacred fire or letters" ("shingles").
January 19 is the turn of the third and last "fire", one dedicated to San Sebastian ("Santu Serbestianu or Pittanu). This martyr, whose devotion is highly prevalent in our island, was an officer of the Imperial Guard of Emperor Diocletian. He converted to Christianity, died after being subjected to bloody torture. Until a few years ago in this Seui fire was fed only with "s'erba de 'Santa Maria', a fragrant shrub widespread in rural areas of the country, set on fire, has the distinct characteristics to develop an intense lighting effect, which according to local oral tradition would have magical effects.
